Absinthe is now once again a popular alcoholic drink, thanks to its legalization in the USA and other countries after many decades of being illegal. A number of young people are trying it for the first time and knocking it back without bothering about it’s alcohol content. Know about Absinthe proof?

Along with blend of herbs wormwood (artemisia absinthium), aniseed and fennel is used in the making of Absinthe. It is commonly known as the Green Fairy, La Fee Verte, because of the characteristic emerald green coloring of classic verte styles of Absinthe.

Absinthe is diluted with iced water before drinking. There is a louche effect when water is dripped over a sugar lump on a slotted spoon and into the Absinthe.

Absinthe was unauthorized not because of it’s high alcohol content but because of the wormwood in it. Dr Valentin Magnan tested worwmood on guinea pigs in 1845 and found that a guinea pig given wormwood oilhad convulsions, whereas, a guinea pig given alcohol just got drunk. Absinthe was found to be much more harmful than other spirits by the testing done by Magnan on the thujone content in it. He and others in the medical profession believed thujone to be a psychoactive element. This was the cause for which Absinthe was banned.

Due to similarities in the structures of a thujone molecule and THC from the drug cannabis they acted in a same manner.

People have now understood that all these claims are inaccurate and false. Thujone is not similar to THC though it acts on the GABA receptors of the brain, when taken in large amounts. According to the experiments done on Absinthe the thujone content in it is so small that it cannot harm anybody. To be effected with thujone one has to consume vast amounts of Absinthe!

Absinthe is a highly alcoholic drink and will get a person drunk quite quickly.
